Sen no Kiseki: Fie's Past

Note: Start of my Best Scenes-series! I figure I'm going to start translating some of the more important scenes in the game. Well, probably not important, but my favorites~ ^^

This scene happens in Chapter 4 when Rean and the others are in Heimdallr for their special field training. Things haven't been going so well between Laura and Fie since an earlier chapter.  Reason is because Fie told everyone that she's an ex-Jaeger.  Anyway, this is the scene that made me start shipping *cough* Laura x Fie XD

Evening.
A corner of the Imperial City Heimdallr. Inside Mater Park.

Laura: --Fie.  Let's speak frankly.  If I win this match, I want you to tell me your "past".
Fie: !..............
Laura: In the beginning, I felt something in your strength that I could not accept. I knew from the start that you were suppressing your ability.  Not only that, your physique and skill... strayed too far from my common knowledge of the "martial arts".
Fie: I suppose.

Machias: (Is that true?)
Rean: (Yeah... honestly, it's quite unbelievable.)

Laura: And then, there's the <<Jaeger>>....to tell you the truth, I don't hold good feelings for that way of life. If knights are on the "path of the righteous", then the Jaegers are on the "course of evil"....I thought that the reason our hearts could not meet was because your being clashed with my values.
Fie: ...........
Laura: But-- that was just a misunderstanding.
Fie: ! Eh.
Laura: After hearing Eliot's words, I tried asking my heart.  Without trying too hard, just as I am, I tried to see through to my true self. When I did that... I came to realize one thing. -- That I knew since long ago you were a person I could trust after all the months we spent together. Nothing to do with values... just my heart made that decision.
Fie: ........ ah............
Laura: But I wasn't able to see that due to the stubbornness in my head... even though my heart had already accepted you, my mind was convinced that we'd never fit.  Most likely that contradiction was what caused us to be unable to link through the ARCUS.
Fie: .................

Machias: (....I see... have you perhaps already noticed?)
Rean: (.... yeah, during our fight with the Wanted Monster today.)

Fie: I was also convinced that there was a "wall" between us.....because Laura's always so straightforward. Somewhere in my heart I sort of gave up hope that you'd ever accept me.
Laura: ......Is that so....
Fie: But, why? Why is it that you want to know my past?  What meaning does it hold for Laura to know my past?
Laura: Hehe... isn't it obvious? It's because I "like" you.
Fie: !! W, what are you saying.....
Laura: It's the same situation as when I became entangled with Rean.....it appears I get irritated when I have trouble understanding someone I have taken an interest in or have expectations for.  Your past -- I want to know a part of why you are the way you are today. So this is just me being selfish. Nothing more, nothing less.
Fie: ....................

Machias: (H, how should I say this...)
Rean: (...as expected of Laura....)

Fie: Laura really is amazing. -- I don't mind telling you my past.  But it's the Jaeger's style to win the reward with their own hands.... Is that okay?
Laura: Hehe, that's fine... But I have no intention for a reward. I'll treat it as the merit of victory.
Fie: ..... Very well.

Machias: Y, you two, aren't you getting along just fine already!?
Rean: Haha.... --I accept this duel. If it becomes too dangerous, I'll call for a stop so give it all you've got.
Laura: Okay....!
Fie: Thanks.

Laura: Haaaaaaa.......!!!!
Fie: ....Haaaaaaa.....

Laura and Fie clash.  After exchanging several blows....

Laura: Hehe, that wasn't bad.

Fie: Same for you.

Laura: Then let me respond with the secret technique my Father taught me.

Fie: And I'll also show you the treasured skill Leader taught me.

As Laura and Fie launch towards each other....

Rean: Stop there!

Duel ends.  Laura and Fie are lying on the ground, exhausted.

Laura: Haaa... Haaa....

Fie: .......Haaa, haaa .........
Machias: T, this....... Hey, Rean. Which one is the winner?
Rean: Although I accepted to be a witness to the duel, but I'm sorry....all I can say is that it's a draw.
Machias: Is that right....
Laura: Hehe... well, I guess it can't be helped.... we'll have to put this on hold until the day I've honed my skills more.... and I also need to settle things with you someday...
Rean: Eh, even me!?
Machias: Haha... seriously.
Fie: .......I lost.
Laura: Eh?
Fie: Nighttime battle is the Jaeger's forte.... I couldn't put an end of the battle even after using a flash grenade.... I would've lost if this were during the daytime....
Laura: That's....
Rean: Yeah, that's probably true.
Machias: Really?
Laura: ....I understand then.  I'll accept the win.

Fie: Yea.........
Machias: Um... then...
Rean: Guess we'll take our leave.
Fie: I don't really mind... Laura, is it okay?
Laura: Hehe... yeah. Let's all listen together.
Fie: ...Okay...  Back then, I was in a place called the <<West Wind Brigade>>....

-- Before I knew it, I was in a "battlefield".
A conflict zone in some unknown remote region of some unknown country, a place I didn't even know the name of....
In that land where numerous Jaegar bands fight to fulfill their clients' greed, I was wandering all alone.
The person who picked me up was <<Jaeger King>>...
The leader of the <<West Wind Brigade>>, a relatively famous Jaeger band.
Easy-going but clever, tenacious and cunning. But also an old man with outstanding bad luck....
But....to me, he's like a parent who raised me.
Even though the band was full of unusual people, all of them were affectionate toward me. 
Eventually, I began to help with things like cleaning, cooking, and luggages....
During spare time, they would teach me various survival skills useful on the battlefield.

...After a series of coincidences, I experienced my first real combat at the age of 10...
And after everyone convinced the stubborn Leader, I became an official member of the <<West Wind Brigade>>.
Several years passed...and I came to be known as <<West Wind Sylph>> (Sylpheed).
Travelling all over the continent with the people in the band....
Even though there were pains and dangers, we managed to survive through it all.
Until last year-- when the Leader passed away.
<< Red Constellations>>....
The Jaeger band said to be a pair with the <<West Wind Brigade>> in the Western regions of the continent...
Their leader <<War God>> and our Leader were long-time rivals.
And then, it finally became a one-on-one showdown between <<Jaeger King>> and <<War God>>.
Their mortal combat lasted for 3 days and nights... in the end, they perished together.
And then... after the Leader passed away, everyone left.
Leaving me behind.

Laura: ...............

Machias: ....So something like that happened....

Rean: And so after everyone disappeared, Fie came to the academy...?

Fie: ....Yeah.

When I was at a lost, Sara appeared in front of me.

I met her by chance when she was tracking the movements of the two Jaeger bands.

After I told her my circumstance, I was taken to the academy by force.

And then I was introduced to the headmaster....

....The rest is as you all know, I guess.

Laura: ....To be honest, it's beyond what I imagined.  The world I knew was so small. 

Laura stands up.

Laura: At last, I know "you".  Of course not everything, but I think I'll be able to know you more bit by bit from now on. So how about it --- shall we give it a try now?
Fie: Ah............ okay.

Laura extends her hand out to Fie and pulls her up.  They draw their weapons against Rean and Machias.

Machias: D, don't tell me....
Rean: ........I see.  I guess this is revenge for the previous Practical Test?
Laura: Yes, let us borrow you guys.  We're still quite exhausted from our battle just now so we may be insufficient but...
Fie: It's kind of on-the-spot, but we'll somehow make it work.
Machias: Nonono! That kind of thinking is just weird!
Rean: Well, it's kind of a rare opportunity.  Just think of this as one part to our special field training. Let us be your opponents then.
Machias: Tch...okay I get it! -- But just so you know, we're not going to go easy on you guys!  Don't hesitate and come at us with all you've got!
Laura: Hehe... thanks you two.
Fie: Well then-- here goes.

After Laura and Fie win the battle.

Laura: ....We did it.....
Fie: ....Yeah...
Laura: Haha...
Fie: ...Hehe...
Machias: Haaa haaa...... you two.... don't be ignoring us!
Rean: Haha.... how do I say this.... This is probably the birth of a very scary combo....

Voice: WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING!
Everyone: !!
Machias: Eh.....
Fie: Ah.
Patrol Soldier: Hm... that uniform... are you all students from some high school!? We came after we received a report about some people making a racket, so you're the ones causing trouble......!
Machias: Um no, that's....! There's a reason to all this that's deeper than Lake Anole!
Rean: Um... We're sorry for causing trouble.  We did try to not bother the neighborhood but...
Laura: Hm I guess fighting in a park was a bit too excessive.

Fie: Yeah it'd probably be better if we went down to the underground tunnel.

Machias: --- Weren't you two the ones who started all this!? Don't talk like it's none of your business!
